With so many things on their plates, it’s not uncommon for patients to want to make every appointment as fast and efficient as possible, including their preventive dental checkups and cleanings. If you’ve got an upcoming visit scheduled and would like to know how you can help make it go as smoothly as you can, keep reading!
Brush & Floss First
Your dental cleaning is designed to remove dangerous deposits of plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth; not clear away that burrito you had before your appointment. Thus, be sure to brush and floss well before you arrive so your dental team can get straight to the task at hand without delay!
Don’t Be Ashamed
Although you may be embarrassed to admit you don’t floss as often as you should, your dental team can usually tell either way. The great news is they’re not here to judge. In fact, they want to help you make your at-home oral hygiene routine easier, so being honest about your habits can often yield useful tips and tricks for achieving this.
Be Considerate
It is important to remember that in most cases you’re probably not the only patient being seen at your appointment time. Thus, there is a good chance there will be other patients and possibly their guests in the building along with you and your dental team. Therefore, if you must bring someone along with you for your visit, make sure they are quiet and respectful and that they don’t disturb others. If you have young children, ask that they stay seated and keep their voices and the volume of any electronics quiet or muted, or equip them with headphones. If possible, bring along another adult to watch them, or leave them home with a trusted caregiver so you don’t need to worry about them during your treatment.
Communication is Key
Your dental team understands that things come up, and as a result, you may need to reschedule your appointment. Should this happen, please try to give them at least 24 hours notice, or call them as soon as possible.
If you are still coming but running late, please call as soon as you can and notify them you will be late. Often, there is a grace period where you can still be seen, but in some cases, you may need to reschedule for another date. Do yourself (and your dentist!) a favor and let them know what’s going on so you don’t need to make an unnecessary trip if you’re too late to be seen after all.
Remember, your dental team understands that life gets hectic and most people are in a hurry. Thus, if you’d like to make your next appointment as efficient as possible, follow these four important guidelines so you can make the most of your visit and get back to your busy schedule!
