If you’d like to straighten your smile with the help of Invisalign but aren’t sure if you qualify for treatment because of past dental work, you may be surprised to know that despite having prior restorations done you could still be an excellent candidate. Here’s why (and how) you can still improve your smile with Invisalign, even if you’ve had prior dental work!
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are deluxe fillings that are attached over the tooth like a cap. Because they are cemented over a real tooth, patients are often unsure if they can still be moved with Invisalign aligners. Although it could be a bit more difficult to attach an Invisalign attachment like a bump to a dental crown, they can often be placed on nearby teeth, or your dentist may be able to create a treatment plan that can still work without the use of attachments.
Dental Bridges
Depending on the severity of your bite issues, it may still be possible to get Invisalign if you have a dental bridge. However, if the abutment teeth that are holding your bridge in place need to be moved, you may not qualify for treatment because it could damage the prosthetic.
Veneers
The great news about veneers is that because they’re typically only attached to the front surface of the teeth, they shouldn’t get in the way of your Invisalign aligners. However, you might need to have your veneers adjusted following your orthodontic treatment if they don’t line up or leave any untreated tooth exposed due to their new positioning.
Remember, although having dental restorations won’t automatically disqualify you from Invisalign treatment, you’ll need to have a consultation with your dentist to determine if you’re a good candidate. Fortunately, in many cases Invisalign will still work even with bridges, crowns, and veneers, however if it doesn’t, you could still qualify for traditional braces.
