2022 New Year’s balloons

For many, New Year’s marks the end of the holiday season and the beginning of a journey to better health. After filling up on pie, cookies, rolls, and other high-carb and sweet foods over the past few months, your teeth may not be in the best shape. Luckily New Year’s resolutions are a great way to set goals for the next 365 days, especially when it comes to your oral health. Read on for four ideas for New Year’s resolutions that will help you achieve a healthy smile.

#1: Visit the Dentist

Every six months, make a visit to your dentist for a biannual cleaning and exam. During these appointments, your hygienist will use special tools to remove buildups of plaque and tartar from your pearly whites, which will lessen your chances of developing oral health issues like cavities. If you have existing oral health issues or are at risk of developing them, your dentist will be able to identify them and administer treatment so your mouth will remain in good shape.

#2: Brush and Floss Better

Brush your teeth in the morning before you eat breakfast to remove the excess bacteria that builds up in the mouth while you sleep. Additionally, floss and brush before bed to clean away food particles and plaque that accumulated during the day. These steps are crucial to maintaining a healthy mouth and will allow you to avoid having to pay for costly restorative treatments.

#3: Cut Out Tobacco

Smoking cigarettes can lead to a range of oral health issues, including cavities, gum disease, and even oral cancer. Cut this habit out of your life to protect your mouth from harm. If you need help quitting, ask your dentist, doctor, or therapist for resources. Additionally, reach out to friends and family for support.

#4: Eat A Tooth-Approved Diet

Eating healthy can do a lot of good for your body, including your teeth. Cut back on sweet and acidic foods and drinks, as these can damage your tooth enamel and raise your chances of developing cavities. Instead, fill up on tooth-approved foods, including:

  • Apples, pears, celery, carrots, and other crisp, fresh fruits and veggies
  • Low-fat or fat-free dairy products like cheese, milk, and yogurt
  • Leafy greens, such as spinach, lettuce, and kale
  • Fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, and mackerel
  • Nuts like almonds, Brazil nuts, and cashews
  • Chicken and turkey
  • Lean beef

As you can see, there are a number of things you can do to improve your oral health over the next year. If you need help getting started or want to learn more ways to take care of your teeth, reach out to your dentist to set up a consultation. By next New Year’s Eve, your smile will be the life of the party!
